Taling Chan Floating Market

Just a few kilometres outside Bangkok but still managing to fall under the organised tour bus hoards is the charming Taling Chan Floating Market. It is a great little market offering all the classic things you want from a floating market. It has plenty of boats moored with a chef in each cooking up delicacies using their BBQs, providing great photo opportunities and most of all delicious food! There are lots of seafood options on offer, crab, huge prawns, fish and shellfish. There are plenty of restaurants to get a seat to eat the great food on offer. The menus are usually in picture format so you don’t need to know the name of things, the magic pointing finger will suffice. The food is quick and cheap, typically ranges from 30 to 60 baht ($1-$2) . This market is popular with Thais which make up most of the clientele. By 11:00am the place starts to fill up but if you just head past the first group of restaurants there’s usually space around. Swarms of catfish are often around where pellets have been thrown in by tourists. Thai musicians playing their instruments adding to the ambiance. It’s also really nice to do a canal boat ride around the local area which can be organised there. The market was started in the late 1980’s with the aim of attracting tourists and is a pretty well organised affair, so it may not feel ‘authentic’ enough for some. It’s also not very large but in short there are no large floating markets without huge crowds to match around Bangkok. Open 8:30am – 5:00pm Sat & Sun only The market is North West of Thonburi and getting here is pretty easy. You can get on the BTS Skytrain to Wongwian Yai Station which is 11km from the market and get a taxi (90B) . Alternatively you can get the air-con 79 bus from Central World or Siam Square (around 26B and 1h depending where you get on).
