Kratie

Why Go

Kratie is a small town on the Mekong that is essentially famous for its proximity to one of the best spots in the world to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins. The town itself has nice little restaurants, with some colonial buildings and a small quaint feel, very relaxed.

Why Not

Kratie is a bit out of the way unless you’re heading to Sen Monorom or connecting with Southern Laos.

To See

Along the riverfront is a great place to have a refreshing cold drink, while watching the big red blazing sunset behind the shoreline of the Mekong. You can also make an excellent day trip the wonderfully relaxed, back-in-time island of Koh Trong, directly opposite in the middle of the Mekong River - Thoroughly recommended (see the highlights)!

How Long

It’s a small place, so a couple of days here should be be enough to see the sights.

To Know

You may notice some strange acting people around, a likely direct correlation to its reputation for organised crime and corruption. It's more of an oddity than a problem for tourists, as the people here are quite friendly.
